The Osage Nation has unveiled a rendering for its Missouri casino. The landscape of gaming in the Midwest is shifting as excitement builds for the expansion of Tribal casinos in the region. Missouri’s first tribal casino, located at Lake of the Ozarks, is progressing towards reality following the Osage Nation’s recent unveiling of the proposed resort’s renderings.

The Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) released by the Osage Nation marks a significant step in their application to have approximately 29 acres of land within Lake Ozark designated as federal trust land. This involves the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) determining that the tribe’s plans won’t negatively affect the surrounding community.

The EA includes the first visuals of the project that the Osage Nation aims to build along Osage Beach Parkway, strategically positioned between Horseshoe Bend Parkway and Bagnall Dam Boulevard.

Class II Casino

Notably, Missouri has not entered into a Class III gaming compact as it lacks federally recognised tribes. The Osage Nation, based in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, roughly 60 miles northwest of Tulsa, asserts historical ties to Missouri by way of Lake Ozark. The Interior Department has acknowledged these claims, setting the stage for the 29 acres of Osage land to be recognised as sovereign pending the outcome of the EA.

Given that traditional slot machines and live-dealer table games are unlikely to be permitted, the Osage Lake Ozarks casino proposal is set to include only Class I and II gaming as specified in the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). Class II gaming comprises games like bingo, with manufacturers creating electronic bingo terminals to mimic the aesthetics of slot machines.

According to the draft EA, the proposed development would not impose more significant impacts on the locality than other comparable developments. It’s noteworthy that last year, Missouri voters rejected a statewide referendum that would have permitted Bally’s Corp. to establish a casino near the Lake of the Ozarks.

Tribal Casinos

Tribal casinos that operate without traditional Las Vegas-style slots and live-dealer tables continue to attract many gamblers. For example, in Alabama, which lacks commercial casinos and Class III gaming compacts, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians operates three electronic bingo venues branded as Wind Creek.

For many sovereign Indian communities, tribal casinos serve as essential lifelines, providing revenue that supports vital services like infrastructure, healthcare, and economic development, thereby significantly aiding in tribal self-sufficiency and sustainability.

The Osage Nation currently operates seven casinos within its reservation in Oklahoma.
