The Reality of Gambling in the Military

Many civilians may not realize the extent of gambling issues faced by servicemembers. At present, an estimated 3,000 slot machines are installed at military bases overseas, generating around $100 million annually for the federal government.

However, not all servicemembers manage their gambling habits effectively. A report highlights improper usage of government charge cards, revealing significant gambling-related expenses incurred at foreign casinos amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

According to the NCPG (National Council on Problem Gambling), about 20 million American adults struggle with problematic gambling behaviors, with military populations particularly vulnerable.

“Servicemembers and Veterans facing gambling addiction deserve the same support we’ve developed for PTSD and other health issues,” commented Senator Ben Ray Luján. This is a crucial step in acknowledging our military community’s realities and ensuring adequate research funding to assist in recovery.”

It is estimated that approximately 56,000 active-duty servicemembers exhibit signs of gambling disorder, and veterans are two to three times more likely to experience similar issues. Alarmingly, fewer than 10% of those affected seek help, which reinforces the need for the proposed research initiative.

Addressing the Screening Gap

Previous attempts to mandate annual screenings for gambling disorders among servicemembers were made through the National Defense Authorization Act in 2019. Unfortunately, a lack of federal funding has hindered the military and Veterans Affairs from collecting required data to implement effective interventions.

If the funding is approved through the Defense Appropriations Bill as anticipated, it will create the first federally recognised pathway for research into gambling addiction within the military.
