Frigid Temperatures and Snow Expected
An Arctic blast is hitting most of the U.S. this weekend, with cold and snow impacting outdoor games in Buffalo with the Bills hosting the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City as the Chiefs host the Houston Texans, and in Philadelphia as the Eagles host the L.A. Rams. Washington Commanders in Detroit against the Lions will be played in the comfy confines of Ford Field.

Avello, DraftKings Director of Race & Sportsbook Operations, spoke with Grandrushonline.com about NFL divisional round betting.

Texans vs. Chiefs

NFL Betting: Texans vs. Chiefs, 4:30 p.m. EST, Tomorrow, ESPN
Spread: Texans: +8.5 (-115), Chiefs -8.5 (-105)
Moneyline: Texans +350, Chiefs -455
Over/Under: 41.5
“With the wind, I think it’s gonna be around 20 degrees, so it’ll definitely be cold. We will see how Houston handles that. They are definitely not a cold weather team. This line is holding, 8.5 was the opener, totals dropped 42.5 to 41.5. The Texans were a little a bit lethargic (against the Chargers) last week in the first half, and then all of a sudden things kicked in. Maybe the coach found some something there that he saw, but the whole game turned around in the second half. They were able to move the ball.

“The Chargers just went totally flat. Joe Mixon, he’s playing, he’s got a little bit of a knee problem, but he’s there. (Azeez) Al-Shaair, he’s got a knee problem. He’ll be there. They got a lot of weapons, those guys.
Patrick Mahomes has never lost a divisional game, and has 15 playoff wins. You know, his wife just had a baby so that will make him pumped up even a little bit more. He’s well rested. He’s coming into these playoffs healthier than he’s ever been. He comes in in the past with high ankle ankles, all kinds of issues. It doesn’t matter. He just gets the job done. These two teams met not that long ago, and it was an ugly game. And looking at those stats, Chiefs were good in the red zone, and the Texans weren’t. Texans, six penalties, Chiefs only a couple. Rushing yards, Chiefs beat them in that.
“One difference in this game, there’s the receiver on the Texans, (John) Metchie, that guy’s a really good receiver. He could make a little bit of difference in this game. So I look for him to possibly show a little bit of what he did in college and make a little bit of a difference in the game. They’re gonna have to get to Mahomes. They only had one sack that last game. That’s just not gonna do it. So another pretty good sized dog. It’s kind of rare that we see the odds be this high on these divisional games, but it’s kind of the way this whole season is gone, just a lot of big favorites, especially towards the end of the season.

Commanders vs. Lions

NFL Betting: Commanders vs. Lions, 8:00 p.m. EST, Tomorrow, FOX
Spread: Commanders: +8.5 (-108), Lions -8.5 (-112)
Moneyline: Commanders +360, Lions -470
Over/Under: 55.5
“We opened up 7.5. We’re up to 8.5. I don’t think it’s stopping at 8.5. I could see this game going higher, 9, maybe 9.5 total. The total is high – 55.5. So expect it to be a close game with a total of 55.5. There’s got to be some kind of separation there, you would think. They haven’t met, these two teams, going back to 2022.

“It’s nice for the Lions to have that No. 1 seed, because you’re well rested, get all your guys back. And the Lions have a strong home field advantage. They’re one of the stronger home field advantages in the NFL, even though they play indoors, because home field advantage sometimes has to do with weather conditions and the environment. But this team is 8-0 at home, and they just play really well.
On the Commanders side, you’ve got Jayden Daniels. He’s been very good, and he’s been very good at those crunch times too, like in the fourth quarter. The whole game has changed with these quarterbacks. They need to be able to run a lot more. So try to keep the game close and give Daniels a shot at the end. Lions 33 points per game – that’s No. 1 scoring offense. David Montgomery returns, so you got Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs back at running back. That’s a tough duo to handle.

“Both teams are really aggressive on fourth downs, and are just totally aggressive overall, different than the normal, run, go down the field, fourth and one or two and kick the field goal. Both of these teams seem to go for it on fourth down. Both coaches are gunslingers, so we’ll see the way this one goes. But you know, Commanders with a quarterback, first year in a playoffs. I know he won’t be too nervous. The question is, is this team good enough to stick around with the Lions?

Rams vs. Eagles

NFL Betting: Rams vs. Eagles, 3:00 p.m. EST, Sunday, NBC
Spread: Rams: +6 (-110), Eagles -6 (-110)
Moneyline: Rams +225, Eagles -278
Over/Under: 43.5
The Rams have to play in the outdoors, in the cold weather. That definitely favors Philly. Plus the Rams just have had a difficult time with the Eagles for quite some time now. Won one of the last eight they’ve played, and they’re one of the last eight against the spread, so they just haven’t done well against this team. It’s not like all those games were in in Philly, five of those games were in LA.

“So Rams had nine sacks last week against the Vikings. If they could get half of those, or four of those against the Eagles, they’ll be in the game. But they just can’t let what happened to them against the Eagles last game happen again. I’m sure it’s in their minds, and people look back, and the bettors will look at it and say they have to improve on that. But you just don’t know. Maybe they just don’t match up well with the Eagles. Matthew Stafford, he needs time, and if he doesn’t get time, he’s not that mobile back there.

Ravens vs. Bills

NFL Betting: Ravens vs. Bills, 6:30 p.m. EST, Sunday, CBS
Spread: Ravens: -1.5 (-102), Bills +1.5 (-118)
Moneyline: Ravens -115, Bills -105
Over/Under: 51.5
“Cold weather, that’s what you want if you are a Bills fan because the team coming in is playing good now. When I say they’re playing good football, they’ve been efficient. The problem with Baltimore, they make a lot of dumb mistakes. They got a lot of players that will do something during the course of the game that will set them back 15 yards and take a touchdown away or something. They do that all the time. It’s a hard team to control if you’re to coach it.

“We opened the game Bills 1.5, and now we’re at the Ravens 1.5. So it looks like a big swing, but it’s really not. It doesn’t take us long to get to the other side. The total has been holding at 51.5. The Ravens have five straight wins. The Ravens, if you go back to the first meeting, they just buried the Bills, 35-10. They went up early and never looked back in that game. When you look at the stats of that game – Ravens, 22 first downs, Bills, 12. Rushing yards – Derrick Henry had close to 200, Ravens 271, Bills 81. James Cook only had 39 yards.

“If you have that type of game there, that could be a runaway. Now, I don’t expect that this week. I expect this to be a little bit tighter game. I mean, the marbles are a little bit heavier this week. The Buffalo coach proclaims to be a defensive specialist, and I just haven’t seen it with this team. And you know, offensively, they’re just good, and they have been good enough the last four years or so. But defensively, they just have a rough time stopping teams. And that has always been a concern.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the weather will play a huge role in determining which NFL teams emerge victorious in the divisional round games. From the frigid temperatures and snow expected to impact outdoor games, such as the Eagles-Rams matchup, to the cold weather favoring Buffalo as they host Baltimore, each team’s chances of winning will be influenced by the conditions. The Commanders-Lions game is expected to be a close contest due to the high total, while the Rams-Eagles and Ravens-Bills matchups are likely to be more competitive due to the teams’ past performances against each other. Ultimately, the key to success for any team in these games will be their ability to adapt to the weather conditions and make the necessary adjustments to come out on top. With that in mind, it’s essential to consider the impact of the weather on your betting decisions and to stay informed about the latest developments leading up to kickoff.NFL Betting OverviewJohnny Avello Interview
